PAS offers free legal advice and support to adult prisoners throughout England and Wales regarding their legal, human and healthcare rights, conditions of imprisonment and the application of Prison Law.

We respond to prisoners’ calls for help through our telephone Advice Line, Letters Clinic, and Outreach Clinics inside prisons.

Levels of self-harm in prison are the highest since records began. PAS can request welfare checks on vulnerable prisoners.

Prisoners have the right to make complaints about their treatment. PAS can help with this process and take action when the prison fails to respond or does so in an unsatisfactory manner.

Two thirds of women in prison have dependent children. Our dedicated Women Prisoners’ Caseworker can advise on matters of both Prison and Family Law.

PAS holds level three accreditation with the Immigration Advice Authority and can advise prisoners with issues relating to detention or deportation on Immigration Law.

In safeguarding prisoners' rights, PAS regularly invokes the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010.

PAS can help older, chronically ill and disabled prisoners receive the medical care and reasonable adjustments they are entitled to.

PAS supports minority ethnic prisoners by helping them challenge discrimination and ensuring they can observe the basic tenets of any faith they may follow.

PAS publishes two guides to Prison Law for LGBT+ prisoners and can advise on their rights and reporting homophobic and transgender abuse.

PAS is able to ensure children's right to a family life is taken into account when decisions about Childcare Resettlement Leave are made.

PAS supports fathers in securing lasting contact with their children, helping them stay actively involved and improving outcomes for both.
“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.”
