{"id":7578,"date":"2026-10-05T11:46:32","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T10:46:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prisonersadvice.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=7578"},"modified":"2026-10-05T11:46:36","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T10:46:36","slug":"prisoners-released-early-risk-living-on-the-streets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prisonersadvice.org.uk\/wordpress\/2026\/10\/05\/prisoners-released-early-risk-living-on-the-streets\/","title":{"rendered":"PRISONERS RELEASED EARLY \u2018RISK LIVING ON THE STREETS\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probation staff have warned that there is a lack of hostel places for 2,000 prison leavers due to be released over the next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those leaving prison are supposed to be found appropriate accommodation before their release, thereby reducing their risk of re-offending, however a shortage of appropriate accommodation means that many risk becoming homeless. With a second tranche of prisoners due for release on the 13th October, the problem is likely to reach critical levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enver Solomon, Chief Executive of the social justice charity Nacro, commented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe know that leaving prison homeless can put people on a path back into custody. It is vital that the whole system from prisons and probation to councils and community providers work together to give people a roof over their heads.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ben Cockburn, the Probation Officer\u2019 Union\u2019s national chair, said HM Prison Service seemed to be in \u201cabsolute denial\u201d about the state of the Probation Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>\u201cWe have massive staff shortages, unsustainable and dangerously high workloads and electronic monitoring is failing to deliver,\u201d he said.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For further information, <a
