{"id":7434,"date":"2026-04-20T14:29:58","date_gmt":"2026-04-20T13:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/prisonersadvice.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=7434"},"modified":"2026-04-20T14:30:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-20T13:30:06","slug":"prisoners-awarded-428000-in-compensation-following-staff-assaults","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prisonersadvice.org.uk\/wordpress\/2026\/04\/20\/prisoners-awarded-428000-in-compensation-following-staff-assaults\/","title":{"rendered":"PRISONERS AWARDED \u00a3428,000 IN COMPENSATION FOLLOWING STAFF ASSAULTS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A Freedom of Information request has revealed that the Prison Service has paid out \u00a3428,000 in compensation over the past three years following staff assaults on prisoners in England and Wales &#8211; a bill picked up by taxpayers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the same period &#8211; April 2023 to March 2026 &#8211; there were 147 payouts totalling \u00a310 million to prisoners assaulted by other prisoners, and 99 payouts totalling \u00a36 million to staff assaulted by prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, one in five surveyed prisoners (20%) said they had feared for their safety. More than a quarter (28%) said they had been verbally abused and 17% said they had been physically abused. Of those who had been abused, threatened, bullied or assaulted, more than half (54%) said they had not reported it.
