{"id":6624,"date":"2025-09-15T10:28:49","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T10:28:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonersadvice.org.uk\/?p=6624"},"modified":"2025-09-15T10:28:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T10:28:49","slug":"prisoners-with-food-allergies-face-hidden-health-risks-in-custody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/prisonersadvice.org.uk\/wordpress\/2025\/09\/15\/prisoners-with-food-allergies-face-hidden-health-risks-in-custody\/","title":{"rendered":"PRISONERS WITH FOOD ALLERGIES FACE HIDDEN HEALTH RISKS IN CUSTODY"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A new report has revealed the daily challenges facing prisoners with food allergies, intolerances, and\/or medical dietary conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though prisons are supposed to offer healthy and varied meals that meet religious, cultural and special dietary requirements, many people in prison report being unable to access appropriate food for themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cI have Crohn\u2019s disease and my diet is not right \u2014 no help with it at all. Can\u2019t buy fresh fruit or veg, half the food is terrible and wouldn\u2019t feed a 10-year-old.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIt\u2019s really not enough to feed an adult, and being Type 1 diabetic is not catered for at all.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cKitchens need to have more options for dietary needs. I\u2019m losing too much weight due to not being able to eat the right stuff.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerns over cross-contamination and unclear labelling regularly led to inmates skipping\u00a0meals, or turning to canteen alternatives, which were often less nutritious or more expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such prisoners were subsequently more likely to experience low mood, frustration, poor emotional regulation, and reduced engagement with education, work or rehabilitative programmes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information,&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/hmiprisons.justiceinspectorates.gov.uk\/news\/food-allergies-in-prisons-a-hidden-health-risk\/\">click here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new report has revealed the daily challenges facing prisoners with food allergies, intolerances, and\/or medical dietary conditions.
