THE OPERATIONAL REALITIES OF NEW SENTENCING RECOMMENDATIONS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following David Gauke\u2019s sentencing recommendations, The Howard League for Penal Reform has examined how they might soon translate into operational reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following review recommendations&nbsp;are estimated to save between 9,000&nbsp;and 10,000 prison places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These&nbsp;are:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Curbing the use of short custodial sentences<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extending the use of suspended sentence orders<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Introducing\u00a0an \u2018earned progression\u2019 model for those on standard determinate sentences\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simplifying the recall system for those on standard determinate sentences.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if these proposals became genuinely operational, however, it is thought that prison places would begin to run out&nbsp;again in just two years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Concerns&nbsp;also exist over how&nbsp;an \u2018earned progression\u2019 model would work, given the current overcrowding crisis&nbsp;and limited staff capacity to manage&nbsp;such&nbsp;a&nbsp;scheme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
